How do catalytic converter's work?

Emission regulations

Damage or failure
|
Catalytic converters are specialist devices mounted in the exhaust system to minimize the emission of harmful pollutants. Combustion engines produce gases such as CO2, CO, HC, and NO2 which can be poisonous or carcinogenic. The converter substrate creates a chemical reaction between these gases converting them to other relatively harmless gases. Operating between 400/800˚C a converter can reduce emissions of CO, NO2 and HC by up to 90% but does not reduce CO2. O2 sensors in the exhaust send signals to the engine management computer which adjusts fuel mixture to reduce emissions. |
From 2008 the emission control system must be fully operational so the converter cannot be removed or tampered with. Euro regulations demand emission levels are meet immediately the engine is started so many vehicles now have “pre cats” which have a different chemical construction to the main converter(s). Such vehicles run a very rich “start up” mode until the O2 sensors confirm all converters are functioning.
|
Extreme temperatures, engine vibration, movement and chemical reactions put enormous stress on the catalytic converter. If restricted the O2 sensors indicate a lean reading and the management system adds more fuel until the problem is rectified. In extreme cases such as a blocked substrate the engine loses power and will stop. Catalytic converters also simply “wear out” and need to be checked as part of your vehicle service programme and replaced after 80,000 km or five years. We offer replacement or repair options at very competitive prices! |

A final word of caution |
![]() |
• A bad smell similar to rotten eggs when the • The vehicle is using more fuel that you expect • The engine is running rough especially at idle |
The extreme heat captured within the catalytic converter can become a fire hazard if the vehicle is parked on long grass.
If the converter needs to be replaced it is important to find out WHY it failed and rectify the problem. This normally involves checking the ignition system and having the engine “tuned”. On a modern vehicle the engine will not perform properly if the catalytic converter is removed or damaged. Without a catalytic converter a petrol engine pours poisonous and carcinogenic pollutants into our precious environment. It is socially irresponsable to remove the catalytic converter and create uneccessary pollution. |
